Retort Curry and Yokan

Update:

Hey guys,
As most of you probably know by now Disqus has stopped providing services to many sites and our site is one of them. Right now, we are in the middle of developing our independent comment system. As of today(26 March 2025), we are releasing the comment with Limited features. There are other features still under development and may take some time to roll out.

As always, please continue to support us. You can show your support in the following ways:

"Next up, we have this product!"

This time, instead of me, Fia-chan and Dolph held up a brown pouch-like item to show the customers. Fia-chan stretched up on her toes, holding the storage pack with both hands so that the customers in the back could see, which was quite adorable.

"Inside these brown containers called 'storage packs,' we have completely different products. These storage packs are excellent containers that can keep the contents fresh for over two months once sealed."

"Ooooh!"

"That being said, simply putting anything into these packs won’t automatically make them last longer, so please be aware of that. Now, the first of the two products in these storage packs is the 'Instant Curry,' which Fia-chan is holding."

Along with the storage pack that Fia-chan was holding, Lange brought out a pot filled with heated water and placed the storage pack into the boiling water.

"This Instant Curry is a liquid-based dish. However, it is not something you eat on its own but rather a dish to be enjoyed with rice. The cooking method is very simple! First, you fill a pot with water and bring it to a boil. At the same time, you place the storage pack containing the Instant Curry into the pot."

I explained the cooking process to the customers in front of me.

"Once the water has boiled, you take this Alpha Rice, which has been sold at our store for some time now, and add a measured amount of the hot water to prepare the rice. Then, you open the storage pack and pour the heated Instant Curry over the rice. And just like that, your curry dish is complete!"

As I explained, Lange transferred the Alpha Rice into a bowl, added hot water to prepare the rice, and then opened the storage pack, pouring the curry over the rice.

"Whoa! That smells amazing!"

"...But that color is something I've never seen before. Is it really good?"

"Everything sold at this shop is delicious, so I’m sure it’s fine. And it looks easy to make. You just boil the storage pack and then use the hot water to prepare the rice, right?"

The customers reacted with various opinions to the wonderful aroma of the curry and the unfamiliar brown liquid.

Indeed, curry has a color that no one in this world has seen before, so it might be a little intimidating to try at first. However, thanks to the trust we’ve built with our store, that shouldn’t be a problem.

"Now then, since you've all been lining up since early morning, let's offer some samples!"

We divided the freshly prepared curry into ten portions and handed them out to the customers waiting in line. Unlike the jerky with outdoor spice, which we had prepared in large quantities, the curry samples were limited to the first ten customers.

The reason for the limited portions was that serving curry involved washing dishes, which would be quite a hassle if we had to prepare samples for everyone in line.

"Whoa! What is this? I've never tasted anything like it!"

"Yeah, there’s a complex mix of spices in here! It’s got a slight kick, but that makes it addictive! This tiny portion isn’t nearly enough!"

"I see. The curry alone has a strong flavor, but when you eat it with the white rice, it balances out perfectly!"

"So I just need to boil water to enjoy this taste? This is some luxurious food!"

The customers who sampled the curry were giving highly positive feedback. It had already been well received by everyone in the shop, including Berna and Ferry, so it seemed that even people from this world could enjoy curry.

That being said, the palates of our store’s customers had certainly become more refined. Before I could even explain, they were already picking up on the taste of the spices and understanding why it was meant to be eaten with rice.

"Damn it! Look at how deliciously they’re eating it!"

"It smells amazing... If only I had come a little earlier…"

The customers who missed out on the samples looked at the lucky ones with envy. Well, curry does have an incredibly enticing aroma.

"Now, our final product is this—'Yokan'! This yokan is a sweet, portable food that, despite its appearance, is packed with energy, providing both sugar and salt. Just like the curry, it can last for around two months as long as the package remains sealed, making it a viable option as an emergency ration."

"Ooooh!"

In reality, with the storage packs that Gregor had crafted, the shelf life was probably even longer, but to be safe, we were stating a conservative two-month period. It's always better to provide a buffer when explaining expiration dates.

For the yokan, we cut it into small pieces so that all the customers who had lined up early could get a taste. Just like with Berna and Ferry, the reaction to the sweet treat was very positive. In fact, the yokan might have been the most surprising product of the day.

The pricing for these storage pack products was as follows: The storage pack itself cost 5 silver coins, while the retort curry was 5 copper coins and the yokan was 1 silver coin. Factoring in profits and the cost of cleaning the storage packs, the final sale price was set at 7 silver coins for the retort curry and 7 silver coins and 5 copper coins for the yokan.

For repeat customers who brought back their storage packs, we would deduct the 5 silver coin container cost from the price. Both products were relatively expensive considering their portion sizes, so they were meant to be an occasional luxury for beginner adventurers.
