A Delicate Matter

Update:

Hey guys,
As most of you probably know by now Disqus has stopped providing services to many sites and our site is one of them. Right now, we are in the middle of developing our independent comment system. As of today(26 March 2025), we are releasing the comment with Limited features. There are other features still under development and may take some time to roll out.

As always, please continue to support us. You can show your support in the following ways:

“No, but still, 3000 coins is a bit too much...”

“No, I believe it is worth that much. This really is a wonderful invention.”

“Yeah. And 3000 gold coins isn’t that big of a deal for adventurers in the royal capital, so don’t worry about it. High-ranking adventurers in the capital can easily earn that much, and even more so the Adventurers' Guild that deals with them. Also, if you don’t accept it, we’d be the ones in trouble.”

“...Understood. Then I’ll gratefully accept it.”

Just as Mr. Patrice said, in my previous world, the compass—or more precisely, the magnetic compass—was one of the three great inventions, so it might be worth that much. Besides, it seems that for high-ranking adventurers in the royal capital, 3000 gold coins isn't an absurdly large sum.

...No wonder A-rank adventurers like Berna and Ferry never seem to care about money. Well, high-ranking adventurers do take on more dangerous quests, so the reward and monster materials would naturally be high-priced.

There’s a lot to think about, but since I needed money right now for relocating the store, I’ll accept it with gratitude. Refusing here and sending the coins back to the capital would be strange. I’ll thank them again when I go to the royal capital.

“Now then, let’s move on to the other matter.”

“Yes.”

Right, the other matter was referred to as a delicate one.

...But what exactly does “delicate” mean?

“Actually, it’s about the dry shampoo that was released recently at the outdoor shop...”

“Dry shampoo?”

Dry shampoo is a product we started selling at the outdoor shop about two weeks ago. Adventurers are often out for long periods, so a product that lets them refresh their heads without needing water became especially popular among female adventurers.

Due to requests from adventurers, we also began selling unscented dry shampoo. Apparently, a pleasant fragrance while out on adventures can cause monsters to detect their position.

Nowadays, adventurers buy the unscented version, while ordinary women purchase the pleasantly scented one as a cosmetic. Since dry shampoo absorbs the oils from the hair and makes it smooth, it seems it can be used as a cosmetic substitute.

Also, using dry shampoo daily might not be a good idea, so I included instructions recommending use only every few days, and to wash the hair properly with water or hot water as usual.

“Ah, actually, there's been a request to regularly purchase a fixed amount of Tetsuya’s dry shampoo...”

“I see. In that case, please decline it as usual.”

We have no intention of wholesaling products sold at the outdoor shop to other stores. Similar requests have come from large merchants and nobles before, but we’ve turned them all down.

Items that help improve adventurers’ survival rates—like the compass, water purifiers, and portable food—are sold through the Adventurers' Guild, but other camping gear is sold exclusively at our store here in town.

Nowadays, our store is registered as an affiliated store of the Adventurers' Guild, so troublesome merchants and nobles no longer come directly to us.

“......”

For some reason, Mr. Rizac and Mr. Patrice exchanged awkward glances. I have a bad feeling about this.

“...Just as Tetsuya instructed, we have refused such requests from merchants and nobles up to now. However, this time, the request came from a member of the royal family of this country.”

“Eh, the royal family!?”

“Th-that’s a pretty huge deal, isn’t it!?”

“Yeah. A formal request came to our Adventurers' Guild via the royal capital’s Adventurers' Guild. As Lilia said, any regular shop would jump for joy at such an opportunity from the royal family, but I figure you’re not like that, Tetsuya?”

“...Yes, that’s right.”

Of course, if I were doing this for money or fame, it would be a great honor to have my shop’s products recognized by the royal family. But in my case, I just want to live a peaceful life without drawing too much attention.

I absolutely don’t want to deal with the stress of overly large and flashy business, or conflicts with competitors or major stores.

“Wait, the dry shampoo’s only been on sale for two weeks, and they already tried it?”

“Apparently, they had been keeping an eye on the outdoor shop for some time. Whenever something new was released from your store, it seems they checked right away. Since this dry shampoo was such a wonderful product, they likely reached out immediately.”

...Seriously?

Most likely, it’s a royal woman who wants to use it as a cosmetic. While I do feel a slight desire to connect with royalty, honestly, my main feeling is that I really don’t want to get tangled up in anything troublesome...
