Na Hee-seon ran over to the collapsed Oh Dong-cheol.
“President Oh! Are you alright?”
Oh Dong-cheol coughed while lying on the ground.
“Kuhuk. H-How….”
“Detective Seo Jung-woo defeated all the bad guys.”
Choi Sun-myung screamed when he heard that.
“Seo Jung-woo?!”
Choi Sun-myung also knew who Seo Jung-woo was. He didn’t know what he looked like since there was no need to know his face.
Seo Jung-woo approached Oh Dong-cheol to check how badly he was hurt. Though he hadn’t formally studied medicine, he had seen all kinds of injuries on battlefields, so he could distinguish external injuries well enough.
Seo Jung-woo placed his hand on Oh Dong-cheol’s body.
“Oh. Your ribs are broken.”
“Aaaaagh! Argh! Aaagh! Argh!”
“Shouting like that only makes it hurt more. Try to bear with it.”
“Uuuuuh. Kuhuk. Aaagh! Aaaah.”
Seo Jung-woo frowned.
“Huh? Oh no. President Oh, you’re bleeding from the mouth.”
“Gasp! A-Am I dying?”
“Fortunately, it doesn’t look like it’s the lungs, so don’t worry too much. You’re not dying. Let’s see… it’s not from inside the mouth…. Could be the throat?”
Na Hee-seon spoke in alarm.
“President Oh seriously injured his throat before. What if it’s hurt again?”
Seo Jung-woo said to Na Hee-seon,
“First, please call 119. Also 112.”
“Ah, okay! Oh no! My phone is broken.”
“Use President Oh’s phone…”
Seo Jung-woo stopped mid-sentence and suddenly moved in a flash.
He grabbed Choi Sun-myung’s arm, who was trying to escape, twisted it behind him, and slammed him onto the hood of Na Hee-seon’s car.
“Choi Sun-myung. You are under arrest for kidnapping, intimidation, attempted murder, and murder.”
Choi Sun-myung resisted frantically.
“No! I didn’t kill anyone!”
“The CEO of Baram Records was killed by a robber 10 years ago. You were the one who ordered the hit. Then you devoured that company and changed its name to Wind Planning.”
Choi Sun-myung’s face turned pale.
“N-No, that’s not true!”
“It’ll all come out in the investigation. Since you’re denying it, I’ll save the murder charge for later. For now, you’re under arrest for kidnapping, intimidation, and attempted murder.”
Seo Jung-woo deliberately said that first, then informed him of the victim’s rights.
Right in front of them, Na Hee-seon’s car’s black box was recording both the image and the voice.
Seo Jung-woo intentionally stood at an angle where his own face wouldn’t appear on the black box, making sure only Choi Sun-myung’s face was captured clearly. He didn’t beat him, only held his arm, so that the video wouldn’t make Choi Sun-myung appear sympathetic.
Seo Jung-woo had also brought a mini camcorder to record the situation. However, that was a backup in case things went wrong. It was more natural to use Na Hee-seon’s car’s black box if possible.
He said to Na Hee-seon,
“There should be something to restrain him in the vehicle they came in. I didn’t bring handcuffs.”
“Ah, okay!”
Na Hee-seon ran to the van. Inside were thick plastic cable ties and wide adhesive tape.
She quickly brought them back.
As Seo Jung-woo tied Choi Sun-myung’s wrists with the cable ties, he said,
“You brought these to commit the kidnapping, didn’t you?”
“T-Those were just for construction purposes….”
“Those guys are gangsters, right? What, are you going to do electrical work with gangsters? You think anyone would believe that?”
Choi Sun-myung couldn’t make sense of the situation. The moment he tried to kidnap Oh Dong-cheol and Na Hee-seon, Seo Jung-woo appeared.
“How did you end up here….”
He couldn’t exactly say he crossed over via teleportation. He also needed a plausible excuse to tell others.
“I saw an article about a long-unsolved murder case. I was the one who originally discovered that case. I figured the real killer—someone like you—might try to destroy the evidence after reading it. So I staked out the place where you’d likely appear.”
“What? You anticipated this whole situation? How….”
“Well.”
Responding to the report, an ambulance and a patrol car arrived.
The officers who got out of the patrol car were startled at the scene.
“Huh? Hey, call for backup quickly!”
Seo Jung-woo showed his ID and spoke to the officers.
“The situation has already been handled.”
“Ah, you’re police too… Wait? Seo Jung-woo? You’re that Seo Jung-woo?”
“Ah, yes.”
“Wow. What an honor. So this situation is…”
The officer looked around the scene again. Five gangsters were unconscious, and Choi Sun-myung was lying face down with his hands tied.
“This is just like in the news. Wow, to see it in real life…”
The first arriving ambulance took Oh Dong-cheol.
While lying on the stretcher, Oh Dong-cheol asked Seo Jung-woo a favor.
“Since it’s come to this, could you give me just one more?”
He was asking for a new song. He couldn’t say it outright with the paramedic nearby, so he left out what it was.
“Why are you bringing that up in a situation like this?”
“You gave one because the car looked pitiful, right? Now it’s not just the car, but the person who’s seriously injured. Isn’t that even more pitiful? So just one more, please….”
Na Hee-seon approached and shouted loudly,
“Whatever it is, I’ll buy it for you. President Oh, just focus on getting treatment.”
Oh Dong-cheol was flustered.
“No, that’s not what I meant….”
After Oh Dong-cheol was taken away, Na Hee-seon asked Seo Jung-woo,
“By the way, Detective Seo. It hasn’t even been a minute since I called—how did you get here so fast?”
“I had a feeling this would happen, so I was waiting nearby. I told you not to talk about the unsolved murder case.”
“The reporter probed, and I slipped up.”
It wasn’t her—it was a staff member at her law office who had slipped up.
Na Hee-seon quickly changed the subject.
“Still, you’re amazing. The criminals danced in the palm of your hand. They probably thought it was a surprise attack when they barged in.”
Seo Jung-woo also changed the subject, knowing it would be hard to answer if she kept digging.
“About that phone call— I didn’t get it. I left my cell phone at home.”
“Huh? But the call definitely went through.”
“Sora or someone else probably answered it. You didn’t hear my voice, right?”
“Right. The moment the call connected, those guys smashed the phone.”
Seo Jung-woo pulled out a flip phone from the other world and showed it. It didn’t connect to this world’s network, but it looked just like a regular phone.
“I used this today.”
“Wow, that’s really old school.”
“But it doesn’t get viruses and is hard to bug.”
“Ah, I see.”
She didn’t understand why he suddenly brought up wiretapping, but didn’t question it further.
Not long after, detectives from the district police station arrived.
Seo Jung-woo briefly explained what had happened.
One of the detectives asked Na Hee-seon,
“Is that car’s black box always recording?”
“Ah, yes.”
“Then we’ll take it.”
“Go ahead. Just let me copy it first.”
“That’s difficult. It’s investigation material, so…”
Na Hee-seon held out her business card.
“I’m a lawyer. If we go through legal procedures to file complaints, it'll be exhausting for everyone, so just take this after I make a copy. Of course, I’ll give you the original.”
“Tsk. Understood.”
In front of the detectives, Na Hee-seon copied the black box recording file and then handed over the memory card.
The detectives arrested the Manager Do gang gangsters and Choi Sun-Myung and took them to the police station. Seo Jung-woo and Na Hee-seon went with them.
At the police station, the detectives gathered and reviewed the footage. The video captured everything — from the initial kidnapping attempt to the assault on Oh Dong-Cheol, and finally, Seo Jung-woo showing up and fighting.
The detectives were amazed as they watched.
“Wow. Look at that.”
“Happened in a flash. A total blur.”
“Looks like we’ll be able to put all these bastards away properly.”
“They say when you’re with Seo Jung-woo, it’s easy to rack up cases — and it’s true.”
Those who were hit by Seo Jung-woo had broken jaws and fractured arms, but no one there brought it up as an issue.
The team leader pointed to a part of the footage.
“This part right here. Ten years ago, the president of Baram Records was stabbed to death by a robber. I know this case. It's an old, unsolved murder case.”
“Whoa. Then this is huge, isn’t it? Baram Records became Wind Planning, right? Wind is a pretty well-known company in the entertainment industry.”
“Of course, this isn’t an ordinary case. And the crime scene is in our jurisdiction. If we handle this well, we’re looking at a major win, right?”
“Definitely. But even though the case happened in our jurisdiction, the one who caught the guy was Seo Jung-woo. Don’t you think it’s a bit risky to compete for jurisdiction against someone like him? He’s not just any famous detective.”
“Let’s just ask. Where’s Detective Seo Jung-woo right now?”
“In the meeting room. We’ll go ask him.”
In the police station meeting room, Baek Sung-min asked,
“Jung-woo. You have to answer honestly.”
Seo Jung-woo sipped the coffee brought by a female officer who said she was a fan and asked,
“Answer what?”
“You’re doing it on purpose, aren’t you?”
“Doing what on purpose?”
“Intentionally causing incidents right around the time I’m set up on a blind date.”
Seo Jung-woo let out a small laugh.
“Why do you always arrange dates near crime scenes? If you keep that up, not only will you not get married, but even dating will be hard.”
“How is that my fault? And maybe you don’t get how this job works yet, but if you stay here long enough, you’ll end up a lifelong bachelor like me….”
Baek Sung-min’s eyes fell on the coffee Seo Jung-woo was drinking. On the table was also a slice of chocolate cake — Seo Jung-woo’s favorite. The female officer who brought them already knew his coffee preferences.
“Never mind. Damn it. All the good-looking guys should just drop dead.”
The meeting room door opened and other detectives came in.
They cautiously asked if they could take over the case involving today's incident and the contract murder case committed by Choi Sun-Myung, president of Wind Entertainment.
Baek Sung-min protested.
“No, this isn’t right. Jung-woo identified the case, found out that guy was the culprit, and even arrested him! Come to think of it, he did everything!”
“We know that. But it happened in our jurisdiction, didn’t it? It’s not like we’re trying to take all the credit — we’ll clearly document how much help we got.”
Seo Jung-woo said,
“Investigating this case alone won’t be easy.”
A detective said confidently,
“Hahaha. No matter how old a murder case is, if the culprit is caught, the rest is just about putting in the legwork….”
“That’s not it. This is a serial murder case.”
The detectives’ expressions hardened.
“Huh? Wh-what did you say?”
“It’s an old serial murder case. I've identified at least three victims. One of them was the president of Baram Records. The other two were people from rival companies. But all those cases occurred in different locations and at different times. So at minimum, three police departments will need to cooperate. Or the metropolitan investigation unit will have to step in. There might even be more victims beyond the three.”
The detectives were flustered. The scale of the case was larger than they had imagined.
Baek Sung-min asked Seo Jung-woo,
“Hey. Is this that old unsolved case you’ve been digging into lately? Wow. I thought we’d crack that one ourselves.”
“I’m sure of the culprit, but there’s not a single piece of evidence. Didn’t you say you wanted to go home on time? If we take this on ourselves, when do you think we’ll get home? Next month?”
“What? Even if you handle it, it’ll still take a while?”
“I’m good at catching criminals, but what am I supposed to do about evidence — dig it out of the ground? I figured out that Choi Sun-Myung is the culprit, but there’s no evidence. Unless he confesses — which he won’t — this is going to take a long time. Plus, this place is far from our area. It’s going to be a hassle to keep investigating outside our jurisdiction.”
“Still, this is a goldmine of a case….”
The reason Seo Jung-woo was trying to hand over the case was because the timeline of the murders differed between the two worlds. Even if he gathered materials with great difficulty on the other side, there was no guarantee that any usable evidence would show up here.
He already had the culprit. Rather than wear himself out reinvestigating the remaining cases, it was better to hand them off to a willing team.
‘If I leave it here, they’ll soon figure out the affiliations of the guys Choi Sun-Myung brought with him. I just need to hear the results later.’
Baek Sung-min also finished calculating things.
“Ah. That so. If we’re not careful, this could be a huge pain. Then let’s hand this off and find some other sweet case to work on. Ah, we should report to the team leader first.”
“I’ll call. Lend me your phone.”
A detective from that police station asked,
“Detective Seo Jung-woo, about what you said — are you sure this is a serial murder case…?”
“I’m certain, based on my analysis.”
“Understood. With just today’s incident alone, Choi Sun-Myung won’t be able to avoid detention anyway. We’ll work with other departments and make sure the serial murder angle is uncovered.”
“Yes, please do.”
Another detective asked cautiously,
“But how did you figure out Choi Sun-Myung was the culprit in such an old case with no evidence…?”
He had seen Choi Sun-Myung commit the same murder in the other world — that’s how he knew.
Seo Jung-woo made something up.
“I just analyzed all the case materials from that time, and that was the conclusion I reached.”
“What?”
Baek Sung-min boasted,
“Our Jung-woo can identify the culprit at a glance.”
“I’ve heard that, but… the Baram Records president case is a cold case from ten years ago…”
Leaving the astonished detectives behind, Seo Jung-woo was thinking about something else.
‘They’ll soon figure out which organization the guys who came with Choi Sun-Myung belong to. Then how should I handle them?’
He had no intention of letting them off. Once a fight started, his way was to see it through to the end in some form. When he fought an international industrial espionage ring, he even went to Japan and wiped out the remnants.
‘If they’d just all gather in one place, I could take them out in one shot.’
