The Sale of Maps and Bestiaries

Update:

Hey guys,
As most of you probably know by now Disqus has stopped providing services to many sites and our site is one of them. Right now, we are in the middle of developing our independent comment system. As of today(26 March 2025), we are releasing the comment with Limited features. There are other features still under development and may take some time to roll out.

As always, please continue to support us. You can show your support in the following ways:

"Speaking of which, I heard from a customer at the outdoor shop that the sales of the simplified map are doing well."

"Oh, that's right. I almost forgot the main topic!"

"Yes, regarding the maps first. It’s been about a week and a half since we started selling them, and the sales have been very promising. Since we set the price quite low, many adventurers have purchased the maps.

Not just adventurers but also merchants and those who need to travel outside the city have been buying them widely. Alongside this, compasses have started to sell again, so if possible, we’d like to stock a little more than usual for a while."

Hmm, as expected from the discussions with Patrice earlier, even a simplified map seems to have significant demand. Keeping the price affordable for novice adventurers was probably a good decision.

"Understood. I’ll ensure the next delivery includes extra compasses."

It seems that as maps sell, compasses that show direction are also selling. Indeed, having a compass along with a map reduces the chances of getting lost even further.

"Thank you. Next, regarding the bestiary, the transcription has been successfully completed. Here’s the original bestiary returned to you, and this is the transcribed version."

"Alright. If you need the original bestiary again, just let me know. ...I see, the illustrations really capture the features well."

First, I received the original bestiary. The original map used for the transcription has already been discarded. A map or bestiary that’s too detailed could cause unnecessary trouble. Since they’re not too expensive, I can always purchase another if needed.

The transcribed bestiary features clear and comprehensible illustrations that effectively capture the characteristics of the monsters in the original. It seems the person who transcribed the maps and this bestiary has quite a talent for drawing.

Beneath the illustrations, the details of the monsters’ characteristics and weaknesses are thoroughly documented. This information should be very useful for novice adventurers.

"Wow, this is both clear and practical."

"There’s quite a bit of content here, so I recommend taking it back to review at your leisure. It would also be helpful if those aware of the circumstances could go through it to ensure there are no issues. Since it’s quite extensive, we’ll, of course, compensate you for your efforts."

Indeed, with dozens of pages, it would be better to take it back to the shop and review it calmly. It would also be wise to gather opinions from Lange and Dolph, who are more knowledgeable about monsters than I am.

"Got it. Once we’ve reviewed it, we’ll bring it back to the Adventurers' Guild."

"Thank you. Since this bestiary isn’t intended for mass production and sale, there’s no particular rush."

The bestiary will be made available to the public through the Adventurers' Guild, but it won’t be mass-produced. Unlike the simplified maps, the bestiary spans dozens of pages and requires hand-drawn illustrations for transcription, making it prohibitively expensive for novice adventurers if sold. To address this, it will be freely available at the Adventurers' Guild.

For this reason, unlike the maps, I’ve already been paid a considerable amount as an information fee in addition to receiving a share of the profits from any sales. It seems the value of information is just as recognized in this world.

"Now then, Tetsuya, I have a request for you."

"Yes, what is it?"

A request from Rizac, the guild master of the Adventurers' Guild… It makes me a little nervous.

Well, at the very least, given my lack of combat skills, I don’t think it’ll be a request for me to undertake a mission.

"I’d like your permission to make the simplified map and bestiary available at the Adventurers' Guilds in nearby towns, just like we do in this city!"

"When we signed the contract, we agreed to limit the distribution and sales to this city. However, if possible, we’d like to extend the same arrangements to the other guilds. Naturally, the conditions will remain the same."

"Sure, I don’t mind."

"Really?!"

"...Um, Tetsuya, while we’re incredibly grateful for your permission, are you certain about this?"

Patrice seems concerned about how quickly I agreed.

"Yes. Actually, I was about to propose the same thing. Along with the maps and bestiary, I’d like to gradually introduce compasses and water purifiers to other towns as well."

In fact, this is something I’d already discussed with the shop staff.

"Oh, that’s great news!"

"Yes, although the situation isn’t as dire as in Al-Flare, many adventurers still die due to getting lost or running out of food and water. Compasses and water purifiers would undoubtedly be valuable in other towns as well!"

"However, I have one condition. Just like the baron who visited the shop before, there might be nobles who make unreasonable demands again. If that happens, I’d like the Adventurers' Guild to protect us even more than before."

Though we couldn’t arrest that baron, no other nobles have caused trouble since then, nor have any merchants attempted to make bulk purchases from the shop.

The Adventurers' Guild seems to be keeping a close watch on both nobles and merchants. If they maintain this level of protection, it should be safe to gradually expand into other towns.

"Of course! We’ll ensure the maps and bestiary’s origins remain a secret. Furthermore, we’ll notify prominent merchants and nobles in the towns where these products are sold that the outdoor shop is a cooperative partner of the Adventurers' Guild!"

"Thank you. I’m counting on you."

Patrice and I shook hands. It’s reassuring to know that the good relationship with the Adventurers' Guild will continue.

By the way, I realized afterward that I forgot to shake hands with Rizac first, the guild master. My apologies, but I’d already mentally designated Patrice as the one in charge of negotiations...
